20 People And One Lesbian. A Public Opera

2011

Performance in conjunction with Athens Pride Cultural Events.
Athens, Greece.
Duration: 2 hours. Musical score by Chris Peck.

I invited twenty Athenins to accompany me singing in a street happening, on the sidewalk joining Academias and Panepistimiou streets. Positioning ourselves among of pedestrians, we sang for two hours with periodic intervals of silence, using the title of the work and three short phrases in the first person: “20 People and One Lesbian. A Public Opera. This is your relationship. I am everywhere and nowhere. You can find me.” During the pauses in the singing, the only indication that the singers were part of a group was small, discrete pin each wore on their lapel. This was the first time these people sang in public. I chose to amplify their exposure by means of the continuous undoing of the vehicle of the choir. Their dispersal in the crowd during the pauses, the underscoring of each person's gender identity and the implication that there is something different going on among them.
